Reggia di Caserta - Acquedotto Carolino
Valle di Maddaloni
To feed the water games of the Royal Palace and, more generally, to satisfy the needs of the Palace and the city, Charles of Bourbon promoted the construction of a new aqueduct, that from him took its name, the Caroline Aqueduct. He entrusted Luigi Vanvitelli with the project, asking him to realize an impressive hydraulic engineering endeavor, which already at the time aroused all the attention throughout Europe, and that is still considered one of the most important construction projects made by the Bourbons.
The Caroline Aqueduct is a majestic structure made by tuff with three rows of round arches that rises to a height of 60 meters and a length of about 500 meters. The entire route of the aqueduct runs mostly underground for a length of 38 km, with some canal-bridges. Among them, other than the Caroline Aqueduct, that crosses the Valle di Maddaloni (CE), the most important ones are the Ponte Carlo III of Moiano (BN), that passes through the river Isclero, and the Ponte della Valle di Durazzano (BN).
