The Integrated Museum Information System of the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism provides comprehensive detailed information on all the state-owned and private museums, monumental complexes, archaeological sites and parks in Italy that are open and accessible to the public.
This survey information on museums and similar institutions (collected in 2015 as part of the 2015-2016 National Statistical Programme) is available online at imuseiitaliani.beniculturali.it.
The information included in the Integrated Museum Information System is organised into four areas:
- How many there are, where they are, and what they do
- How they are organised and managed
- Their facilities and services
- Their relationship with the public and their geographical area
The website enables customised searches of both the 2015 and the 2011 data based on specific cognitive needs, either nationally or by geographical area. The information describes the holdings and characteristics of all the state-owned and private museums, archaeological sites, archaeological parks, and monumental complexes in Italy, and searching it is a useful way to find out about the resources of the National Museum System, currently under development.
The survey was carried out as implementation of a Memorandum of Understanding stipulated between the National Institute for Statistics, the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism, and the autonomous Regions and Provinces.
Registration is required to access the system, using a form available at imuseiitaliani.beniculturali.it
