European Heritage Days 2020

On Saturday 26th and Sunday 27th September, the EHD – European Heritage Days, the most extensive and popular cultural event in Europe, will be held in Italy.

Guided tours, extraordinary openings, cultural events will be organized in museums and cultural venues, following the theme “Learning for Life”. In addition, on Saturday night there will be extraordinary openings of State museums with entry tickets for a symbolic price of 1 Euro.

The events calendar is regularly updated on the MiBACT website, in two different sections, dedicated to the initiatives scheduled on Saturday and Sunday and to the extraordinary openings on Saturday evening, respectively.

Each institute will notify the safety and participation rules adopted in order to protect the health of the staff and visitors, and in particular to avoid gatherings and ensure social distancing, in accordance with the applicable regulations and provisions in force upon implementation of the initiatives.

The theme

Learning for Life” [“Imparare per la vita”] is the slogan chosen by MiBACT, inspired by the proposal of the Council of Europe “Heritage and Education – Learning for Life“, to recall the benefits of cultural experience and transmission of knowledge in modern society.

The proposal, in fact, is to reflect on the role that training has played, and still plays, in the transfer of information, knowledge and skills to the new generations, and on the value that traditional knowledge can assume in relation to the unprecedented present challenges and the growing weight of modern technology. This should take into account both the intrinsically specific elements of the different territorial contexts and the importance that knowledge, traditions and local experiences have had, at several levels, in the creation of a recognized and shared cultural heritage.

In this perspective the places of culture are called to play a leading role, being the historical-artistic heritage a vehicle of knowledge of the past, of reflection on the present, of inspiration for the future. The initiatives proposed by the museums relying on a common path with the communities and bodies custodian of local traditions and knowledge are particularly meaningful, as well as the activities jointly organized with schools and universities, aimed at building a new museum narrative that takes into account the current educational needs and, at the same time, the demands for knowledge expressed by the new generations.
